Thailand: Microsoft to Enable a Cloud & AI-Powered Future

Microsoft continues its cloud and AI expansion across Asia, by empowering Thailand's digital transformation in a pledge towards digital prosperity

Microsoft has just pledged to build new cloud and AI infrastructure in Thailand, which will offer AI skilling opportunities to more than 100,000 people.

At the Microsoft Build: AI Day in Bangkok, Satya Nadella, Microsoft Chairman and CEO, made the announcement to 2,000 developers and business and technology leaders.

Growing capacity to thrive in the AI era

Thailand’s enterprises, local businesses and the public sector organisations are calling for better cloud computing services, to help them capitalise on the significant economic opportunities presented by AI.

AI could contribute nearly US$117bn to Thailand’s gross domestic product by 2030, in research by Kearney.

Microsoft’s digital infrastructure commitment includes establishing a new datacenter region in Thailand, which will:
  • Expand the availability of Microsoft’s hyperscale cloud services
  • Create enterprise-grade reliability and performance
  • Ensure compliance with data residency and privacy standards

This comes after Microsoft also announced that it will invest US$1.7bn over four years to build new cloud and AI data centres in Indonesia. Dharma Simorangkir, President Director of Microsoft Indonesia, said that the investment sets a new milestone for Indonesia’s digital landscape, where Indonesians can be empowered with the infrastructure and skills needed for the AI era.

Thailand: A digital-first, AI-powered future with Microsoft

Dhanawat Suthumpun, Managing Director of Microsoft Thailand, said that Microsoft was dedicated to helping Thailand excel as a digital economy, ensuring that the benefits of cloud and AI technologies become widespread and contribute to the prosperity and wellbeing of all of the people in Thailand.

“Together, we are laying the foundations for a future that is not only technologically advanced but also inclusive and sustainable,” he said.

The event was also attended by Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, who gave a special address.

“Our ‘Ignite Thailand’ vision for 2030 aims to achieve the goal of developing the country’s stature as a regional digital economy hub that significantly enhances our innovation and R&D capabilities while also strengthening our tech workforce,” said Prime Minister Thavisin. “Today’s announcement with Microsoft is a significant milestone in the journey of our ‘Ignite Thailand’ vision – one that promises new opportunities for growth, innovation, and prosperity for all Thais.”

Satya Nadella, Chairman and CEO at Microsoft shared that Thailand has an opportunity to build a digital-first, AI-powered future.

“Our new datacenter region, along with the investments we are making in cloud and AI infrastructure, as well as AI skilling, build on our long-standing commitment to the country – and will help Thai organisations across the public and private sector drive new impact and growth,” said Satya.
